Day number 5 of Equi-est Summer of Horse Safety!
There’s not a way to tell when an emergency dismount is better than staying on your horse, and experts have even suggested that dismounting may cause more problems than falling off. However, sometimes you know when you’re in danger and need to dismount, and quickly. Remember to take both feet out of the stirrups and do not use the reigns to help you dismount (this may spook your horse and you pull him/her forwards).
It’s always a good idea to practice before you have to do this for real with the help of an instructor.
